Nearly a century ago, the Dutch helped build the foundations of modern aviation out of nothing, as many said it couldn't be done.

We can do it again

Europe has ±335 airports suitable for regional air mobility.

Smaller airports are mostly underused. Our ambition is to connect them, using smaller, quiet and zero-emission aircraft, flying at lower altitudes than traditional aviation. A bit like a high-speed rail network, but in the air.

Electric aircraft are already flying! Larger ones are in the making, first delivery expected around 2030.

FAQ

What is Vlindair?
Vlindair is a Dutch startup that aims to build Europe's first all-electric scheduled passenger airline, flying on regional routes under 500km.
When will you actually start flying — and why not sooner?
We're targeting first commercial flights around 2031. That's deliberate. We are bound by the timelines of electric aircraft manufacturers and certification. Until they deliver, we use our time wisely, to build a movement around electric flying and prove real demand for specific routes. We start building the operational organisation as soon as we have clarity on aircraft delivery.
Where will you fly?
We are primarily exploring regional routes that bigger airlines ignore and other connections are time-consuming, due to a long drive or a slow train. We are also exploring existing popular routes where there is demand for a sustainable alternative. Our first base will be in the Netherlands, which brings destinations in the UK, Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and France within reach.
What aircraft will you fly?
Our primary focus is on European-made, 9-seater all-electric aircraft. Fleet decisions will be made as clarity on demand solidifies and manufacturers further develop their product.
Is electric flying safe and is the technology actually ready?
Fully certified electric aircraft (two-seater Pipistrel Velis Electro) have been flying safely in Europe since 2020, for example by E-Flight Academy in the Netherlands. To ensure the safety of passengers, Vlindair will have to adhere to the same standards as any other airline. And new electric aircraft will have to undergo the same rigorous EASA certification as every other passenger aircraft in European skies.
How much will a ticket cost?
Decisions about pricing will be made further down the road. We are designing Vlindair's product around a price point that is competitive with premium rail and business class tickets of existing airlines. Long-term, we aim to make electric flying available at rates competitive with economy class tickets of existing airlines.
How is flying electric better for the environment?
All-electric aircraft are being designed to produce zero direct CO₂ emissions in flight and make less noise than conventional aircraft. With electricity from renewable sources like wind and solar, this means air travel can be much cleaner than today. And, as electric aircraft are being further developed, every environmental claim must be backed by verified data, in accordance with EU regulation.
Are you going to offer a flying taxi service?
Our focus is on point-to-point scheduled passenger services. While we carefully watch the latest developments in the so-called eVTOL vehicle category (electric vertical take-off and landing), this is not our priority at the moment.
Will Vlindair succeed?
Starting an airline is hard. Most new operators, electric or not, struggle for common reasons: they build expensive operations before they've proven enough people want to fly their routes, or their business case suffers from high fixed costs and volatile fuel prices. We've designed Vlindair to avoid these risks. We spend the early years building genuine demand and validating specific routes first, so that operations follow proven need rather than hope. And by flying all-electric, our energy costs are lower and far more stable than jet fuel. It's a slower path, but a sounder one — we only take on the cost of flying once the routes make sense.
